Choose the bucket by matching the material, required volume and machine capacity. High-volume buckets suit light materials such as grain, while dense or abrasive materials such as soil and aggregates usually need a smaller, stronger bucket with suitable wear protection. Confirm the bucket weight, capacity, width, bracket type and loaded centre of gravity against the machine’s load chart before ordering. 
Bucket capacity is calculated from its internal width, height and depth, adjusted for the bucket’s tapered or curved shape. Manufacturers may quote struck capacity, measured level with the top edge, or heaped capacity, which includes material piled above it. For accurate planning, use the manufacturer’s stated cubic-metre or cubic-foot capacity and multiply it by the material’s bulk density to estimate the loaded weight. 
No. Buckets may look similar, but mounting brackets, pin centres, carriage geometry, hydraulic requirements and rated capacities vary between machines. A bucket should only be used when its brackets match the machine, it locks securely and its weight and loaded capacity remain within the machine manufacturer’s limits. 
A suitably designed loader bucket can carry out light digging, backfilling, levelling and grading. A standard material bucket is not necessarily built for hard excavation, so compacted ground, rock or repeated digging may require a reinforced bucket, digging teeth or a 4-in-1 bucket. The machine and attachment should be used within their intended duty and never forced beyond their structural or traction limits.
