The sweeper should normally be wide enough to cover the machine’s tyre track while still fitting through gateways, buildings and narrow working areas. A wider brush covers ground faster, but it is heavier, requires more hydraulic power and can be harder to manoeuvre. Measure the machine width and the narrowest access point, then choose a working width that provides a small overlap beyond the tyres without compromising stability.
A powered sweeper collector normally requires a hydraulic service to drive the rotating brush and, where fitted, operate opening or tipping functions. Passive bucket brushes and some fork-mounted brushes do not need hydraulics because they work through contact with the ground. The required oil flow, pressure, couplings and return arrangement should be checked against both the sweeper specification and the host machine.
Depending on its design, an agricultural sweeper can collect loose mud, grain, dust, leaves, small stones, slurry residue and general yard debris. Fine dust, wet compacted material and larger rubble may require slower operation, a scraper edge or a different attachment. The material must not exceed the collector’s capacity or contain objects likely to damage the brush or hydraulic components.
For routine farmyard cleaning, a powered sweeper collector is the best option when debris needs to be swept up, carried and tipped elsewhere. A bucket brush or simple mounted brush is often more economical where loose mud, grain or debris only needs to be pushed into a pile. The surface, debris type, required finish and whether collection is necessary should determine the choice.
A grab or squeeze-type handler gives the greatest control when stacking wrapped bales because it holds the bale securely without piercing it. For unwrapped bales, a spike or fork can be suitable where it provides stable support and clear visibility. The attachment should allow accurate placement while keeping the load close to the machine, and the final stack must be stable, level and arranged in accordance with safe working procedures.
A bale handler can fit a tractor, loader or telehandler when it has the correct mounting brackets and remains within the machine’s rated lifting capacity. To confirm compatibility, provide the machine make and model, carriage or bracket type, hydraulic services if required, and the bale size and weight. Photographs and bracket measurements are particularly useful where the carriage is unusual or has been modified.
For unwrapped round bales, a bale spike is a simple and effective option, while wrapped round bales are better handled with a non-piercing grab. Square and Heston bales are normally handled with forks, spikes or a purpose-built square-bale attachment that supports the bale across its width. The final choice should reflect whether the bales are wrapped, their dimensions and weight, and whether they will be loaded, transported or stacked.
Agricultural tipping trailers can carry suitable loose loads such as grain, crops, soil, manure, compost, vegetation and general farm materials. Dense materials reach the trailer’s weight limit before the body is full, while light materials may fill the volume first. The load must be evenly distributed, contained securely and kept within the trailer, tyre and tractor ratings.
A snowplough uses an angled blade to move snow to one side as the machine travels. A snow pusher has side wings or a box-shaped profile that carries snow straight ahead to a discharge point. Ploughs suit longer roads and repeated passes, while pushers are effective for clearing large yards, car parks and open areas.
The blade should normally cover the machine’s wheel track when angled, while remaining narrow enough for gates and routes. The host machine must have sufficient weight, traction, lifting capacity and hydraulic services for the plough. Wider blades clear faster, but they create greater side loads and can be harder to control in deep or compacted snow.
Match the gritter’s hopper capacity, mounting system and loaded weight to the tractor’s lift capacity. Choose a spread width that suits the roads and yards being treated, and check whether the unit needs PTO, hydraulics or electrical control. Also consider corrosion-resistant construction, calibration, storage and the type of salt or grit available on site.
A tractor-mounted gritter spreads salt, grit or another approved de-icing material over roads, yards, paths and work areas. It helps improve traction and reduce ice formation during cold weather. The spreading rate and width should be adjusted to the material, surface condition and site treatment plan.
Yes, a purpose-built weighted tractor toolbox can combine secure storage with rear ballast. The ballast must be retained inside the box, the total weight must stay within the tractor and linkage limits, and the box should be positioned so it provides effective counterbalance without making steering light or reducing stability. A normal lightweight toolbox should not be filled with improvised ballast unless it is designed for that purpose.
Choose a box large enough for the tools and parts routinely carried, but small enough to fit without obstructing the tractor or exceeding the mounting capacity. Account for the combined weight of the empty box, tools and any ballast. For linkage-mounted boxes, confirm the tractor’s rear-lift capacity and the amount of counterweight actually required for the front attachment in use.
The best position is accessible from the ground, protected from mud and moving parts, and clear of the driver’s view, controls, lights and access steps. It should not create a snagging hazard or reduce ground clearance. A rear linkage-mounted weighted toolbox may be appropriate where both storage and counterbalance are required, while smaller boxes are often mounted on approved chassis or cab brackets.
A tractor toolbox should be fixed to a purpose-designed bracket or a structurally suitable mounting point using secure, correctly sized fasteners. The installation must not rely on the ROPS unless the tractor manufacturer has approved it, and drilling or welding the protective structure should be avoided. After fitting, check that the box cannot move, open accidentally or interfere with controls, visibility or maintenance access.
